Inlandia Institute, Riverside Art Museum Present Exhibition For Suicide Prevention Month

Local literary nonprofit the Inlandia Institute and the Riverside Art Museum have teamed up for Suicide Prevention Month, presenting an online juried exhibition around suicide prevention in September.

Cati Porter is the executive director of the Inlandia Institute. She says the project originated with the Riverside Art Museum, where some artists wanted to find a way to commemorate Suicide Prevention Month.

“There are many of us in the community who have been touched by this in some way or another, and so this was a way to try and reach out to people, especially right now, during the pandemic with so many people isolated," Porter says.

"It's very easy to get swept up in depression and we're trying to give them some hope, so by the artworks that are exhibited and the writings, they're all about surviving suicide or getting past suicidal tendencies. There are five pieces included in the exhibit proper and then we have just launched part two, which is writing in response to the art, so we're hoping to have a new crop of writing. And for our part, Inlandia also has on our online literary journal, inlandiajournal.org, we have a separate heading for suicide prevention projects where we will be posting new work daily from the project.”

You can view the artwork from the museum as well as writings selected by the Inlandia Institute at riversideartmuseum.org/sppe.

If you or someone you know is suicidal, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK.
