A record number of Californians are now registered to vote - and the state's registration rate is the highest in nearly 25 years. Capital Public Radio's Ben Adler reports on the new data released yesterday (Monday) by the Secretary of State's office.
The new report shows California had nearly 20 million registered voters on the rolls as of a month ago. And the state’s 79 percent registration rate is the highest since just before the 1996 presidential election, when it topped 80 percent.
Comparing this report with the previous one last fall, two trends from recent years continue to show up: a sharp increase in voters identifying as “no party preference” — up above 28 percent … and a drop in Republican registration, down to about 23-and-a-half percent. The Democratic Party’s registration rate is also dropping — down to a shade above 43 percent. But it’s still adding voters, while the GOP is losing voters.
