Twelve-Year-Old Colton Student Died Of Enlarged Heart; No Sign Of Trauma From Bullying

UPDATED AT 5:00 PM THURSDAY, APRIL 14:

Reports this afternoon indicate that a 12-year-old Colton grade  school student who died suddenly during school hours on the playground of Grant Elementary School on Tuesday succumbed to an enlarged heart.

The San Bernardino County Coroner's autopsy results show that, in addition to having an enlarged heart, Dominick Gallegos also showed signs of early congestive heart failure.

The boy reportedly tripped and fell while playing soccer during P.E. class early Tuesday afternoon.  Some of Dominick's friends said that after falling, another boy "known as a school bully stepped on his chest repeatedly, then shook him when [he] stopped breathing."  Dominick was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

However, the coroner determined that there was no indication of trauma to Gallegos' body, putting into question reports of the bullying incident.

KVCR will have further updates to this story this afternoon on All Things Considered and tomorrow on Morning Edition on 91.9 KVCR.

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
