A leading force behind the creation of the UC Riverside School of Medicine -- and its founding dean -- Dr. G. Richard Olds has resigned.
Olds announced his resignation, effective August 31, in a letter that was sent to students and staff. Those affiliated with UCR's med school say Olds' departure comes as a surprise.
The Press Enterprise reports that as recently as May, Olds spoke about growing the medical school and his plans to remain dean for at least several more years.
In a letter announcing his departure, Dr. Olds offers kind words to the med school staff, but is cagey when it comes to his reasons for leaving. All he says about his planned August resignation is, "it is time for me to move to my next professional challenge."
Dr. G. Richard Olds arrived at UCR in 2010.
In August of 2013, KVCR's Ken Vincent interviewed Dr. Olds about the diverse bunch of local students who make up the Med School's inaugural class, and about the UCR Med School's groundbreaking curriculum that Dr. Olds hopes will help change the face of medical education in the U.S. To listen to a podcast of that interview, click here.
