An international team of researchers from the Event Horizon Telescope project have revealed the first direct image of a black hole, which is some 55 million light-years from Earth. One co-discoverer, Jessica Dempsey, described it as looking like the flaming eye of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
