San Bernardino County supervisors unveiled concept renderings for the planned memorial to the victims of the Dec. 2, 2015 terrorist attack in San Bernardino yesterday.

The Board of Supervisors and families of the victims observed the fifth anniversary of the mass shooting which claimed the lives of 14 people by laying white roses where the memorial will be built.

Supervisor Josie Gonzales chairs the Memorial Committee that is made up of family members of the victims, survivors of the attack, first responders, and other county staff.

Gonzales addressed press gathered at the memorial site, sharing her remembrance of the county staff who died on Dec. 2.

“I knew many of those that died. Having been here 16 years, you get to know people like they’re part of your family. And our Environmental Health Services Department was a department that was very near and dear to me, and they are located in this building, so I got to see many of them every day.”

The memorial is called the “Curtain of Courage” and will be comprised of mesh panels made of bronze and steel cast with different color glass pieces. There will be 14 alcoves, one for each person killed, with an “idiosyncratic” element unique to each person.

The installation will be created by artist Walter Hood, and will be located at the east side of the County Government Center campus at 385 N. Arrowhead Avenue in San Bernardino.
