  • On today's edition of KVC-Arts, David speaks with former guest, Raymond Strait. Raymond is a prolific author with ties all around this region, and in addition to his books on Bob Hope, Jayne Mansfield, Rosemary Clooney, and more, at the age of 97 – he’s still writing. David also sits down with Joe Di Fiore about his release, “Out of the Woods,” a blend of classical and contemporary instrumental works, several of which are of his own composition.
  • One night at The Apollo in 1958, George Treadwell fired the entire lineup of The Drifters. He then hired all of the members of The Five Crowns to become The Drifters. Charlie Thomas (along with Benjamin Earl Nelson - better known as Ben E. King) was a member of The Five Crowns, and while the original "classic" Drifters produced some hits, some of the biggest came from the era when Thomas was in the group. This was also the time when Lieber and Stoller were writing for the group. On January 31st, 2023, Charlie Thomas passed away at the age of 85. David Fleming interviewed Thomas in late 2015 when he was about to perform in the region, and has re-edited the conversation for this edition of KVC-Arts.
  • This is an extremely fun one with David Fleming in conversation with John Cafiero, of Osaka Popstar. David first interviewed Cafiero alongside Dr Demento talking about "Dr Demento - Covered In Punk," an INCREDIBLE collection of punk artists covering Dr Demento staples, and some artists known through Dr Demento covering some classic punk! Cafiero produced and performed this on this one. This edition of KVC-Arts is a rebroadcast from May of 2022, when Osaka Popstar re-released their first album, and also released "Ear Candy," an EXTREMELY fun EP with a punk treatment of a few mega hits by some bands which weren't quite real. The Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You," The Archies' "Sugar Sugar," and a lost tune from the Monkees. There's also an Osaka Popstar original with a video starring Fred Armisen, though in animated form.
  • David Fleming speaks once again with Al Pitrelli, guitarist, music director and original member of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. We'll hear a bit more about Savatage (the group out of which TSO was born) - specifically, Paul O'Neil, the main storyteller for Savatage AND Trans-Siberian Orchestra. A bit from and about TSO of course, and also touching lightly on some funk/fusion projects Pitrelli was a part of at one point - O'2L and CPR and/or The Randy Coven Band.Trans-Siberian Orchestra will be in the region December 3rd touring The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, and KVCR has tickets at a couple different giving levels during our Fall Membership Campaign. Listen - and give - at kvcrnews.org.
  • The program begins with David Fleming in conversation with Richie Furay. He was one of the founding members of Buffalo Springfield, Poco and more. We'll hear about his newest solo release, IN THE COUNTRY. Some of the songs are covers of modern country favorites, and some – with major mainstream success.
  • David Fleming speaks with Cheryl Hodge, a jazz vocalist and pianist whose works float between mainstream, straight ahead jazz, and jazz fusion. Her newest release, out in the Fall of 2022 is called LOVE is, and was at one point under consideration for this year’s Grammy’s. We’ll also hear from Brian Cunningham, engineer – AND providing the guitars on Love Is.www.cherylhodge.com
  • The Cowsill were the real-life inspiration for The Partridge Family. We heard about their early years a few months ago on KVC-Arts. Now Bob Cowsill and David Fleming speak about some of the recordings after they became adults... and the brand-new album just out.
  • David Fleming speaks with comedienne Leanne Morgan. We'll hear about her current tour - at Morongo October 29th, and of course how she ended up in comedy (she was selling jewelry and was cracking up her clients to the point of one of them... embarrassing herself).
  • David Fleming speaks with (as pictured) Janelle Guerrero, with Stronger Together Now, and Natalia & Darcie Rickert, from the organization ELATION. We'll hear about a Latina Fest coming soon to downtown Redlands, and also, the organizations making it possible.
  • David Fleming speaks with Steve Vai about his newest release, “Inviolate.” We’ll also hear about a few tracks from the cd/album – “Zeus in Chains,” “Little Pretty,” and “Teeth of the Hydra.” The latter is titled as it is because it’s played ON The Hydra – a monster guitar with three necks - a (four-string) bass, a seven-string guitar, and a twelve-string guitar. Some of the areas are fretless, with a variety of pickups. There’s also a small harp-string section, and midi plug ins to accommodate synthesized sound FX. With “Zeus in Chains,” this is yet another “riff or run captured on an unplugged guitar connected to an iphone next to the bed late at night” moments. He has a lot of those. And it was in listening to it as he progressed… the song TOLD him it would be called “Zeus in Chains.” The conversation starts talking about a jam Vai enjoyed for a long, long time before realizing it came from Steve Lukather. It became the roadmap (for a number of wonderful reasons) to creating a solo - which was the perfect way to begin a conversation about an instrumental album. We’ll hear about some approaches to things which come across as much deeper than one might expect. Or at the very least, we’ll hear about things approached in a unique fashion or unique reason. I enjoyed this one at SO many levels!
