IE Policy Summit Returns to UCR's Center for Social Innovation

U.C. Riverside’s Center for Social Innovation is hosting an Inland Empire Policy Summit this week with a focus on building a more equitable future during COVID-19 pandemic recovery efforts.

While this is the third policy summit the center has hosted, Director Karthick Ramakrishnan says this time it’s different.

“Because we are cognizant that we have been in a pandemic for more than a year, and as we think ahead to recovery, that we’re going to build back differently and build back better, if you will, with equity and resilience and sustainability as core values that guides the work,” says Ramakrishnan.

The interactive event is a chance for leaders within government, non-profits, philanthropy, and community to learn about and discuss existing programs aimed at reducing the social and economic disparities worsened by the pandemic says Ramakrishnan.

“These are not future plans, they are actually solutions being implemented right now, but most community members and even public officials and investors don’t know about them," Ramakrishnan. "That’s one of the challenges in the Inland Empire, is that we are such a diverse and spread out region, not everyone knows all that is happening.”

The end result will be a report about a month after the summit, that includes local initiatives and the leaders behind them in areas like infrastructure, education and health equity, housing development, transportation and the environment.

And with the Biden administration supporting these kinds of efforts, Ramakrishnan says this report will help the region reach state and federal support for building this better future.
