7:45am SATURDAY UPDATE: Canyon Fire 90% Contained At 2,662 Acres; Air & Ground Crews Reduced

OCFA

7:45AM SATURDAY UPDATE:

The Canyon Fire – still burning in Corona's southwestern foothills bordering Riverside and Orange counties south of the 91 freeway – is 90 percent contained, according to the latest official update this morning (Saturday).

Orange County Fire Authority reports the acreage burned remains at 2,662, and the perimeter of the fire has not grown.  OCFA reports fire activity has been minimal for two days, although firefighters are still building containment lines and are ready to respond to flare-ups and hot spots.  Crews of more than 1,900 personnel earlier this week are now at 925, and 2 helicopters remain assigned to the Canyon Fire.

Local authorities are asking people to avoid recreational use of Skyline Drive due to heavy equipment working in the area throughout the weekend.  Also, as support equipment and personnel are being reduced, there are a lot of big trucks and other large equipment being transported through the area.

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
