WED. A.M. CANYON FIRE UPDATE: 2,000 Acres Burned,15% Contained, Evacuations Still In Effect

6:30 am WEDNESDAY UPDATE:

Thanks to shifting winds that kept the movement of the canyon fire away from hundreds of homes in Corona’s southwestern foothills, fire authorities say good progress was made yesterday containing the blaze, and with a forecast of lighter Santa Ana winds than yesterday, they’re hoping to make better progress today.

As of yesterday evening (Tuesday), the fire has been kept to 2,000 acres, with 15% containment. There are more than 1600 firefighters battling the fire from the air and ground. Good progress continues to be made on all flanks of the fire.

No evacuation orders have been lifted. No new evacuation orders have been given. Current evacuations are still in place on the south side of Green River Road, from the 91 freeway to Trudy Way (near skyline drive trail). No vehicles are permitted in the evacuation area.

An evacuation center is operating at the Corona High School Field House, between the Football Field and Baseball Field, at 1150 W. 10th Street.

The Corona/Norco Unified School District has announced that same seven schools that were closed yesterday will be closed again today, Adams, Coronita, Eisenhower, Franklin and Prado View elementary schools, Cesar Chavez Academy, and Citrus Hills intermediate.

For locals, here are closures to be aware of: on the Riverside side of the county line, all roads south of Green River Road from State Route 91 to W. Foothill Parkway, including the Skyline Drive area, remain closed. Green River Road is open to residents only. On the Orange County side,  Eastbound 91 from Coal Canyon Rd. To Green River Road, including the Green River Road off ramp, is closed.

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
