Fast-Moving Wildfire Shuts Down I-15 Both Directions Near Cajon Pass; Vehicles Burning

msnbc

The fast-moving North Fire burning north of San Bernardino near Cajon Pass, shut down I-15 -- the main route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas -- both directions.  The blaze, which was first spotted early Friday afternoon, resulted in hundreds of vehicles being trapped for miles in stalled traffic. National TV news networks aired live video of vehicles - including big rigs - burning on the freeway deck as gusty winds blew flames and embers across freeway lanes. Public safety scanner channels heard firefighters reporting structures burning amid the chaparral in the Cajon Pass area north of San Bernardino and south of Hesperia.

Detailed information is fast-changing as the effort to contain the fire continues. 919 KVCR is filing reports for NPR for top-hour newscasts through the overnight. For more information about the status of the North Fire, go to this link:

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
