An investigation continued today into what police called a “long and horrific gun battle” in south Riverside that led to the death of the suspect and a California Highway Patrol Officer.
The shooting occurred Monday evening, in the area of Box Springs Boulevard and Eastridge Avenue, just west of Interstate 215.
CHP Officer Andre Moye had pulled over a pickup truck for a violation when the suspect pulled a weapon and opened fire on the officer, according to the CHP.
Moye made a distress call while under fire, and soon received backup from other CHP officers as well as Riverside Police Department officers and county sheriff’s deputies.
The suspect, Aaron Luther of Beaumont, was fatally shot during the exchange of gunfire. Moye was killed and two other CHP officers were injured.
Riverside police are now leading a multi-agency investigation involving the CHP and the sheriff’s department.
The suspect’s father, Dennis Luther, told KTLA5 that he had an extensive criminal history and that he may have been trying to commit suicide by cop.
The two injured officers are expected to recover.
The CAHP Credit Union has established a memorial fund to benefit the family of Officer Moye.
