Sunday Update: Holy Fire Now 41% Contained At 22,714 Acres; Voluntary Evacs Reach SW Temescal Valley

Twitter/@ClevelandNF

UPDATED 2PM SUNDAY, AUGUST 12, 2018

originally posted 9AM SUNDAY, AUGUST 12, 2018

Although it still remains a threat to populated communities, authorities on Sunday reported good progress containing the Holy Fire, which has displaced thousands of Riverside County residents from homes since it broke out nearly a week ago.

The Twitter feed for the Cleveland National Forest - part of the unified incident command coordinating the firefight - reports this morning (Sunday) that the Holy Fire is being held to 22,714 acres, and is 41% contained, indicating good progress Saturday on both suppressing the spread of the blaze and improving containment lines.

Authorities on Sunday continued to lift evacuation orders for some Lake Elsinore communities that were evacuated earlier in the week, but also issued a new voluntary evacuation alert for neighborhoods farther north.  Incident Command authorities put portions of the Trilogy community in southwestern Temescal Valley, south of Corona, on voluntary evacuation notice.

Evacuation orders for Lake Elsinore foothill communities began being lifted on Friday, and authorities say they'll further consider the status of other areas still under mandatory evacuation through Sunday.  Residents can keep up with the changing status of evacuation orders at @ClevelandNF.

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
