Updated Inland Empire Primary Election Results Show Some Races Still Too Close To Call

Ben Adler / Capital Public Radio

San Bernardino County and Riverside County elections officers on Friday released updated vote count totals from last week's primary election.  As the vote-counting continues in both counties, some races are still too close to call.  Here's an update from KVCR's Ken Vincent.

In San Bernardino County, in the 31st District Congressional race the numbers have changed a bit.  Democratic incumbent Congressman Pete Aguilar now leads his Republican challenger Sean Flynn 46% to 45%.  However, out of nearly 70,000 votes counted so far in that race, Aguilar leads Flynn by just more than 300 votes.

In the race for San Bernardino mayor, city Councilmember John Valdivia has increased his lead over his general election opponent, incumbent mayor Carey Davis.  Valdivia has 36% of the vote; Davis has 29%, meaning that the current mayor of San Bernardino has an uphill climb headed toward the November general election.

In Riverside County, former state Assembly Minority Leader Chad Mayes is trailing his Democratic challenger Deniantoinette Mazingo.  Mazingo has 39% to Mayes 33% as they head into the general election.

In the close race for Riverside County Sheriff, incumbent Sheriff Stan Sniff goes into the general election trailing his challenger, sheriff’s Deputy Chad Bianco.  Bianco has 35% of the vote counted so far; Sheriff Sniff has 33%.

And for the Riverside County Supervisor District 2 seat to replace retiring John Tavaglione, former state Assemblyman Eric Linder has secured one of the top two general election spots in that race,  Second place is still up in the air: out of a total 31,000 votes counted so far in that race, fewer than 200 votes separate Corona Mayor Karen Spiegel and environmental justice activist Penny Newman for the number 2 spot in the general election for that open county supervisor seat.

The vote-counting continues.  Riverside County is scheduled to release it’s next vote count update tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon, while San Bernardino County is expected to release its next ballot count update today (Monday).

State law requires county elections officials to report their final results to the state by July 6, 2018. The Secretary of State has until July 13, 2018, to certify the results for the election.

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
