Senator Connie Leyva of Chino has introduced legislation establishing smog check requirements for big rig trucks in California. KVCR’s Benjamin Purper has more.
The bill, SB 210, would require smog checks for heavy-duty diesel trucks. Under current law, big-rigs don’t have to have the same types of smog checks that regular passenger cars do.
In a press release, Leyva’s team says the bill help remove approximately 1,600 tons of harmful particulate matter from the air. That’s the equivalent of taking 375,000 trucks off the roads.
Around one million big-rig trucks drive on California’s roads each year. Many of those trucks pass through the Inland Empire, transporting goods from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, as well as to and from the Inland Empire’s many warehouses.
SB 210 will be considered by a State Senate committee later this spring.
