Big Job Gains In California Could Shield State From Recession

California added more jobs in April than the first three months of the year combined.  More from KVCR's Ken Vincent.

Employment lawyer Michael Bernick used to run the state agency that releases the jobs reports. He says April’s 46-thousand job gain suggests California isn’t heading for a recession anytime soon.

APRILJOBS-3-CC / Bernick: “The predictions so far of the employment expansion ending proved to be wrong. And we’ll have to see in the next year, but I think there’s every reason to think that — particularly the fact that the tariffs, which have created such concern and noise — despite that, our job growth has continued.” (0:19)

Despite the big gain, California’s unemployment rate didn’t change in April. It remains at 4-point-3 percent.

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
