Advocates Ask Newsom To Fund Long-Term Solutions To Homelessness

Advocates for homeless people say they’re pleased with the one billion dollars California Governor Gavin Newsom included last week in his revised budget for those without permanent shelter.

But some, like Lisa Hershey of Housing California, say there’s too much of a focus on short-term fixes such as temporary shelters instead of permanent housing.

“It really isn’t addressing the basic needs or the longer-term solutions to keep Californians healthy, safe and stable.” (:08)

Newsom’s budget sets aside six hundred twenty five million dollars for cities and counties to build or expand emergency shelters.

That money would also pay for so-called navigation centers to connect people with homeless services.

The governor’s plan also has forty million to connect UC and Cal State students who are homeless with housing services.

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
