The agency that for years has been responsible for guiding the development of vacant land around March Air Reserve Base has served its purpose and needs to be dissolved, according to a proposal approved by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors. KVCR's Ken Vincent has details.
The decision by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors to wind down the March Joint Powers Authority was unanimous Tuesday.
The motion to dissolve the agency – which was created in the early 90s to administer the land surrounding March Air Reserve Base – was introduced by supervisors Marion Ashley and Kevin Jeffries.
Both men say the agency has done its job of shepherding the 4,400 acres surrounding the base into development agreements. According to the Press Enterprise, Ashley also thinks the annual 600,000 dollar price tag of keeping the agency running is now unwarranted.
Some of the projects brought in by the March JPA include medical facilities, veterans’ housing, and warehouses.
With the Riverside County Supervisors supporting the wind down, the proposal is now in the hands of the Joint Powers Authority who will tentatively discuss phasing themselves out at their next meeting in June. The lands currently administered by the March JPA would be divided up among the cities of Riverside, Moreno Valley, Perris, and Riverside County.
