Backers of rent control are trying again this year in the California Legisalture after lawmakers and voters rejected measures last year. More from KVCR's Ken Vincent.
A group of Democrats announced new bills yesterday (THURSDAY) that also include rent caps and eviction protections for tenants.
Assemblyman Rob Bonta (BAHN-tuh) says it’s crucial to help renters who “face daily fears.”
Bonta: “What will happen if I lose my home? Where will I go? How will I find affordable housing? Will I have to move to a different city after spending my entire life in this one? We want to help those tenants and we will.” (0:11)
The California Apartment Association says it believes the state’s real housing problem is a production shortage … and plans to oppose bills that could slow new construction.
The measures would allow cities to expand local rent control ordinances … place a statewide cap on rent increases … and restrict how landlords can evict tenants.
