'Threat' To Valley College Now Called A 'Hoax', But Campus To Remain Closed Tuesday

What was reported to be a bomb threat that led to the evacuation of students and personnel at San Bernardino Valley College this afternoon is now reported to be a hoax.  College officials, however, say the college will remain closed through tomorrow pending an investigation.

The Press-Enterprise's website reports that a bomb threat phoned in around 3 p.m. today [Monday] prompted the closure and evacuation of San Bernardino Valley College facilities.  The evacuation order included KVCR, whose offices and studios are part of the Valley College campus.  Before they could switch the station to automated programming, 91.9 KVCR control board operators were forced to leave the facility with NPR programming running unattended for a period of time.  Eventually, staff were able to switch the station to automated programming and return to its regular Monday evening air schedule.

Around 6 p.m. this evening, the P-E reported the threat was declared a hoax, and SBVC Campus Police Chief Pierre Galvez said the department had ended its investigation.  Around 9 p.m. tonight, SBVC sent out text and Twitter messages to students and staff saying, "The San Bernardino Valley College Campus will be closed tomorrow [Tuesday] pending investigation."

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
