IE Lawmaker Proposes More Oversight Over Private Home Schools In California

Jan 18, 2018

This home in Perris is registered as a home school, with David Turpin listed as the school principal. This is also the home where authorities this week found Turpin's 13 malnourished children held captive, with some of the children chained with padlocks to the furniture. The California Department of Education and the local school district say they have no authority to inspect or regulate private or religious home schools.

In the wake of a Perris couple being held in jail for holding their children captive in their home - which was also registered as a "home school" - an Inland Empire lawmaker is proposing legislation to give the state some oversight over home schools.  KVCR's Benjamin Purper filed this report for NPR News.
