Governor Newsom Says Trump Adm. Is Already "Dumping" Immigrants In California

Andrew Nixon / Capital Public Radio

Here’s California Governor Gavin Newsom’s response to President Trump’s call to send migrants seeking asylum to sanctuary cities: It’s already happening. But Newsom isn’t ready to agree there’s a state of emergency at the border. Capital Public Radio’s Ben Adler reports.

Over the last several days, President Trump has repeatedly said the federal government should place Central American migrants in “sanctuary cities.” He also called out California by name. In an interview with Capital Public Radio, Governor Newsom said the Trump administration is ALREADY “dumping people on the streets” of San Diego.

Newsom: “In many ways, policy that’s unwritten. That’s what they’re doing. They’re sending folks to street corners and Greyhound bus stations in a sanctuary state, disproportionately in our state. Legal asylum seekers.” (0:14)

The governor says California will take in its “fair share,” and, quote: “continue to defend and embrace sanctuary policies.” But Newsom does NOT call the surge in migrants a national emergency. Instead, he says, the president is “inviting a crisis of his own making” by failing to adequately staff and fund the processing of asylum seekers.
