SUNDAY A.M. UPDATE: Canyon Fire 2 Is 75% Contained; "Things Are Going Relatively Well"

SUNDAY 10:00AM UPDATE:

The Canyon Fire 2 burning in the Anaheim Hills area, is 75 percent contained this morning (Sunday) and the area burned remains at 9,217 acres.  As of Anaheim Fire & Rescue's briefing at 8:00 last night, personnel, equipment, and air support was being held to about the same levels as Friday: there are 984 personnel working to fight the blaze, with help from 64 fire engines, 6 water tenders, 8 bulldozers, and 2 helicopters.

At 7:00am this morning, Anaheim Fire & Rescue released a statementsaying the situation remained stable overnight. Firefighters continued to address flare-ups driven by hot, dry canyon winds, which they say they expect to continue through this morning when winds are expected to peak.  "Given conditions," the statement said, "things are going relatively well."

In fact, the firefight is stable enough that the agency says it will reduce the number of incident updates on containment and acreage burned from twice a day to once at the end of the day, beginning Monday.  Anaheim Fire & Rescue says it will provide other updates as it gets them, on its Twitter feed,  @AnaheimFire , and on it's Facebook page

The 241 toll freeway between the 91 freeway and Santiago Canyon Road is back open to traffic.  The Orange County Register reports that early Friday, southbound lanes of the 241 toll road from the 91 freeway to the Santiago Canyon/Chapman exit reopened; the fire had damaged infrastructure. But the right lane remained closed for all cars except emergency vehicles, with motorists asked to drive slowly and keep on the lookout for fire crews. And the off-ramp to Santiago Canyon Road remained closed, along with the on-ramp from Santiago Canyon to the northbound 241. The northbound toll road opened later Friday.

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
